The 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Podcast

A George Garzone Masterclass In Russia

May 24, 2016 by Nick Mainella Leave a Comment

I’m from the Boston area and George Garzone has been a fixture in my life since I started playing jazz in middle and high school. He plays every single Monday night in Cambridge with his band, The Fringe. He also happens to be one of the coolest guys on earth and an otherworldly musician. Being in the same room and listening to him play is something that you MUST do if you ever get the opportunity.

I like this clinic because he talks a lot about a variety of topics. Yes, some of it is saxophone related but I promise, no matter what instrument you play, you will gain something by watching this.

He talks about his chromatic triadic approach to playing and sheds some great light on what that concept is all about. I also love some of the things he says about his friend Joe Lovano who also happens to be one of my favorite players in the world.

We should all strive to get to this man’s level but the fact that so few will is a testament to the genius of George Garzone. Enjoy!
