The 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Podcast

Ingrid Jensen With A Great Lesson On Sound And Intonation

May 4, 2016 by Nick Mainella Leave a Comment

Ingrid Jensen is one of the best trumpet players out there right now. I have also had the pleasure of working on some of this stuff with her in person when she was a guest artist where I went to grad school. She kicked my butt on this stuff and made me realize that I needed to work on this material.

The stuff that she talks about in this video is REALLY important. Using your ears to start playing with good intonation is more important than using a tuner. The tuner has it’s uses but connecting with a drone helps your ears and is just plain more fun than using a tuner and trying to line up a needle.

The good news is there’s an app that can reproduce the effects of the Shruti box. (Technology!) This is great because you don’t have to worry about out of tune pianos and can be sure that you’re getting a good reference.

Enjoy this video and start working on this stuff today!
