Let me start by saying that listening to yourself play is one of the most painful, awful experiences in life. It's the worst. Whenever I listen to myself play I realize that the stuff I thought I had sounding really good needs a lot more time and a lot more effort to get close to where I believed it was. So at this point I have to ask myself, "do I want to believe that I sound really good or do I actually want to sound really good?" I actually want to sound good! Deep down I know that … [Read more...]

Episode 129: Enclosures Part 2
This week we continue our journey on learning about enclosures and how to use them. Last week we went over the basics of target notes and how to start surrounding them. This week, we talk about more advanced ways to enclose our target notes. We cover double-single approaches from above and below and we end the episode with double-double approaches from above and below. These sounds are essential when it comes to effectively playing chromatically driven solos. When we introduce chromaticism … [Read more...]

Want to Get Better? Don’t Give Up When it Gets Uncomfortable!
I did a lot of practicing this week. It felt really good to get a ton of hours in a short period of time and I can already feel the benefits and growth when I'm on the bandstand. I have to tell you though, I wanted to quit at least 10 times throughout the week as well. Not quit for the day, but more like quit music and learn how to do computer programming or something like that. This is such a common thought that pops into my head when I'm working on something so hard that my brain feels like … [Read more...]
Episode 128: Enclosures
This week's episode is a listener request which I'm thrilled about! We have talked a lot about bebop and some of the devices that are used in this specialized form of improvising. Next week we will take a look at more complicated ways to play them and give you a few more tips and tricks. For now though, enjoy our … [Read more...]
Episode 127: The Back Door Cadence Part 2
This week is all about tactile ways to handle the back door cadence that we introduced to you last week. Playing over this progression is similar to any other in the way that we want to examine the voice leading first. While it turns out to be a little bit different in the back door cadence, the principles are the same and it actually results in some brand new sounds for us. I hope you enjoy this episode and never get surprised by a back door resolution from here on out! WANT THE PDF THAT … [Read more...]

Episode 126: The Back Door Cadence
This week is all about a chord progression that you have probably seen a lot, but maybe never knew what it was called or how it functioned. The back door cadence is a kind of deceptive cadence that appears in many jazz standards. This week, we are going to discuss what it is, how it functions, and give you a couple of examples from a couple of popular jazz standards. Make sure you tune in next week as well when we will talk about the unique aspects of playing over this particular progression and … [Read more...]
